Prerequisites for BIMI

  • DMARC at enforcement: Your domain must have DMARC with p=quarantine or p=reject
  • SVG logo hosted: Square aspect ratio, centered artwork, filled background (not transparent)
  • Stable HTTPS hosting: Logo and VMC must be served over HTTPS with long cache headers
  • VMC for Gmail: Gmail requires a valid VMC from authorized CAs (Sectigo, DigiCert)

Logo Requirements Checklist

How to Deploy Your BIMI Record

  1. 1
Verify DMARC enforcement: Ensure your domain has p=quarantine or p=reject.
  2. 2
Host your SVG logo: Upload to a stable HTTPS URL with proper cache headers.
  3. 3
Copy the generated record using the button above.
  4. 4
Create a new TXT record in your DNS with:
    • Name/Host: default._bimi
    • Type: TXT
    • Value: Your generated BIMI record
    • TTL: 3600 (or your provider's default)
  5. 5
Wait for DNS propagation (usually 30 minutes to 24 hours).

Test with major providers: Send test emails to Gmail/Yahoo seed accounts.

⚠️ Important: The record must be created at default._bimi.[your-domain]. The underscore prefix and subdomain structure are required.

Understand when you need a Verified Mark Certificate and which providers offer them. Get clear requirements for Gmail logo display.

BIMI Best Practices

  • • Ensure DMARC is at enforcement (p=quarantine or p=reject) before deploying BIMI
  • • Test your SVG logo meets all requirements using online validators
  • • Consider VMC investment for Gmail visibility (required by Google)
  • • Monitor logo display in test accounts before full deployment
  • • Use our free DMARC checker to verify prerequisites

VMC/CMC Certificate Providers

Gmail requires an approved BIMI certificate and DMARC enforcement. This can be a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) — and, where supported, a Common Mark Certificate (CMC) — issued by an approved Certificate Authority.

VMC vs CMC: Key Differences

  • What they are: Both are X.509 certificates used by BIMI and referenced via the a= tag (PEM URL). They play the same technical role in validating logo use.
  • Trademark requirement (VMC): Requires an active, registered trademark from an accepted trademark office that matches the logo/brand. Issued by CAs such as DigiCert or Sectigo after organization and trademark verification.
  • Eligibility (CMC): Designed to cover brands that may not have a registered trademark. Validation relies on alternative evidence (e.g., documented common‑law rights/usage) plus standard org verification. Availability and acceptance vary by CA and mailbox provider.
  • Provider support: Mailbox provider policies evolve. Confirm current acceptance of CMC vs VMC with your CA and target providers (e.g., Gmail/Yahoo). When in doubt, a VMC with a registered trademark is the most universally accepted option.
  • Cost/renewal: Similar annual pricing (roughly €900–€1,500) and renewal cadence; expect identity re‑validation and ongoing eligibility checks.

Tip: Your BIMI TXT syntax is identical for VMC or CMC — only the certificate contents and how they’re validated differ.

Sectigo

Offers both VMC and CMC options with trademark verification services

DigiCert

Global certificate authority offering VMC issuance with comprehensive validation

VMC/CMC certificates typically cost €900–€1,500 annually. Exact requirements and acceptance (especially for CMC) depend on the CA and mailbox provider.
